From the perspective of history, the Wikileaks phenomenon can be described as nothing less than politically earth shattering; in some respects the Ninety-Five Theses of our day. Although, the political ramifications of Wikileaks continue to unfold and remain to be seen, multimedia artistic expression inspired by these events has already commenced.
As has been true throughout recorded history, artists’ commentary on historical events comprises a vital component of our public discourse. Art brings historical events to a wider audience and as time progresses often becomes more recognizable than the primary sources on which it is based. When the political consequences of Wikileaks material have run their course, history will remember the films, documentaries and other creative products that were created during this period.

As historians, we search for interdisciplinary linkages within time periods to help explain events and describe commonalities among time period to learn from past experiences. Mulitiple Wikileaks Movie efforts are underway by the likes of HBO, DreamWorks Studios, Steven Spielberg, ProjectorScreen.com, Alex Gibney and Universal Pictures. The legend of Julian Assange and impact of WikiLeaks continues to engross society and soon we’ll be watching various WikiLeaks Movie, Film and Documentary projects in movie theaters globally. And not just one movie but multiple! And the Wikileaks Movie and Film Trailers will be hopefully be just as outstanding.
The rights to Andrew Fowler’s “Julian Assange Biography: The Most Dangerous Man in the World” have been sold to Barry Josephson and Michelle Krumm. This duo plans to deliver audiences a suspenseful, provocative thriller sometime in the near future. It will be fascinating not only to read Fowler’s book but to see how Josephson and Krumm interpret these words at the very same time with the Julian Assange story continues to grow and evolve. This WikiLeaks Movie, chronicling one of the most unique personalities and stories of our time, is definitely one to track. And the movie trailers will be exciting as well. Wikileaks Movies, Films & Biopics
1. DreamWorks Studios // Steven Spielberg (Date TBD): The nature of this Wikileaks Movie Screens and the timing of its release are unknown.However, what is known at this time is that DreamWorks Studios has acquired the movie rights for two books. The first is WikiLeaks: Julian Assange’s War On Secrecy, written by David Leigh and Luke Harding who work for the Guardian. Dreamworks has also purchased rights to Daniel Domscheit-Berg’s Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World’s Most Dangerous Website
2. Universal Pictures // Alex Gibney (Date TBD): Universal Pictures is funding a documentary about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, and has tapped Director Alex Gibney to produce this film. Gibney is a highly acclaimed director, responsible for films and documentaries such as (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Casino Jack and the United States of Money).
3. Annapurna Productions // Mark Boal of Hurt Locker // Megan Ellison Financier (date TBD): Screenwriter Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) and Management 360 have teamed up with Megan Ellison (Financier and daughter of Oracle CEO) who runs Annapurna Pictures (True Grit). This team has optioned The Boy Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest an article by Bill Keller from the New York Times. As with the DreamWorks movie project on Wikileaks, many details are unknown at this time, including whether Mark Boal has the time to write the script writing on this project. Given his outstanding capabilities and the knack Megan Ellison has for the film business this is one of the Wikileaks movie and film projects we very much look forward to at Wikileaks-Movie.com.
4. HBO & BBC (2012): HBO is producing a film and biopic in collaboration with the BBC which will be directed by Charles Ferguson. Rowan Joffe will write the script and screenplay. Executive Producers will be Josh Maurer, Alixandre Witlin, David Stern, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. This film will be based on source material material such as work by Raffi Khatchadourian who wrote a June 7, 2010, article No Secrets: Julian Assange’s Mission for Total Transparency
5. Producers Barry Josephson and Michelle Krumm: This duo has optioned the film rights to Andrew Fowler’s unauthorized biography The Most Dangerous Man in the World (April 2011) Fowler is a highly acclaimed author who has spent a good deal of time with Julian Assange of Wikileaks
6. Julian Assange: A Modern Day Hero? Inside The World Of WikiLeaks (May 3, 2011): This DVD is produced by NRG
7. Incident in New Baghdad by Director James Spione (April 24): James Spione is noted for his work on documentary and fiction films, including The Playroom (1996) and American Farm (2005). The Tribeca Film Festival chose to host the 2011 world premier of Incident in New Baghdad which features soldier Ethan McCord who witnessed and responded to the now famous “Collateral Murder” incident in Iraq.
8. Wikileaks: War, Lies and Videotape (2011): this documentary, produced by by Luc Herman & Paul Morerra and owned by Zodiak Rights, has been shown throughout the world on Discovery and will also be shown by Current TV in the United States, ABC in Austrailia and NDR in Germany.
9. A Leak In Paradise (2012): This film, directed by David Leloup and Jean-Philippe Rouxel is “A documentary on tax havens and Swiss whistleblower Rudolf Elmer, a man who broke the Cayman bank secrecy law by publishing sensitive client data on WikiLeaks”

And at practically the same time Universal Pictures is backing Alex Gibney in the production of a Julian Assange Documentary. Gibney, who was behind such films as Casino Jack and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, certainly has the track record which will combine with this remarkable and still-unfolding story to provide audiences with yet another WikiLeaks-related Movie.
Will producers focus primarily on Assange, the man? Or will they widen their lens to examine and track the many explosive issues, scandals and debacles that Assange and his Wikileaks organization have catalyzed and sparked? Will they keep it strictly serious and intellectual down to the code or will they lighten up the story and bring into view some of the more interesting and personal anecdotes and stories. Who knows? All of this remains to be viewed! We wish Gibney all the best in tackling the biography of Julian Assange, one which may serve as a defining story of our tumultuous times.
Finally, HBO is moving into the mix as well. As reported by Deadline, Mr. Assange will be brought to home viewers thru a trans-Atlantic collaboration between HBO and the BBC. It will draw inspiration from Raffi Khatchadourian’s piece titled No Secrets: Julian Assange’s Mission for Total Transparency. This is yet another WikiLeaks Movie, television or film project announced in recent months. And given the trove of information and data which has, or will be leaked, there are definitely enough perspectives and unique “takes” on this story to go around.
